The book of fairytales and stories of 1001 nights once struck Europeans no less than the colors of oriental fabrics, the flickering of the steel of ruthless Muslim blades, the mysterious shine of multi-colored Arabic bowls.

A collection of stories, framed by a story about the Persian king Shahriyar and his wife named Shahrazad (Scheherazade). The name "A Thousand and One Nights" is formed under the influence of the Turkic culture, since the original name of the Persian cycle was "A Thousand Fairy Tales". In the Turkic environment, adding a unit to a thousand bore a tinge of countless numbers.

The question of the origin and development of the "1001 Nights" has not been fully clarified to this day. Attempts to look for the ancestral home of this collection in India, made by its first researchers, have not yet received sufficient justification. The prototype of the Nights on Arab soil was probably the translation of the Persian collection Hezar-Efsane (Thousand Tales) made in the 10th century. This translation, known as the "Thousand Nights" or "One Thousand One Nights," was, as evidenced by the Arab writers of the time, very popular in the capital of the Eastern Caliphate, in Baghdad. We can not judge the nature of it, since we have only reached the story framing it, coinciding with the framework of "1001 Nights". In this convenient frame, various stories were inserted at different times, sometimes whole cycles of stories, in turn framed, such as "The Tale of the Hunchback", "The Peddler and Three Girls" and others. Individual tales of the collection, before including them in the written text, existed often independently, sometimes in a more common form. It is possible to assume with good reason that the first editors of the text of fairy tales were professional storytellers, who borrowed their material directly from oral sources; under dictation of storytellers of a fairy tale were written down by the book sellers, aspiring to satisfy demand for the manuscript "1001 nights".
